Ash Wednesday
Lent begins today

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. The Parish will hold the traditional Ash Wednesday service of Eucharist and ashing at All Saints Church at 8.00pm tonight. This ancient service helps us to set our minds on 'recovering from selfishness'. It is an important part of any Christian life and an important part of the Church's year. Come along at 8.00pm and give a bit of time to God at the beginning of lent.

Lent groups
You might also like to think about joining a Lent group. There are three groups meeting to discuss the book 'I Thirst' by Stephen Cotterill. The Tuesday evening group still has places. We meet at 8.00pm. Call Chris Eyden 0207 384 0115 to get further details on the book and the venue.

Lent lunches
On Sundays in Lent (except this one coming) we will be cooking a fantastic Sunday lunch in the Brewer Building to raise money for the Bishop’s Lent Appeal. Lent lunches are a great occasion and really popular. Meet new people. Great food, video for the kids.

Get your tickets for the lent lunches from Julie in the Parish Office. 020 8788 4414

Thought for the Day
Giles will be doing Thought for the Day on Radio 4 on the next three Thursdays, starting tomorrow morning.

And can I add a huge thank you to everybody involved with Noah’s Flood – especially Alison Hunka, Donna Cox, Julie Kidson, Catherine Dando and many others. It was just brilliant and nearly £1,000 was taken in buckets on the door for AIDS kids in Zimbabwe, with more money from ticket sales yet to be added up. Both shows were sold out. A fantastic success.

Crossing Borders Project

Dear Friends,

Due to circumstances in the Middle East beyond our control, the Crossing Borders Project has had to be cancelled. This is a great shame for all concerned, and I wish to express my thanks to all those who have put so much into this; particularly people from Meteorite and those who have donated auction prizes.

As a consequence, the launch event on Thursday night has also been cancelled. I will send out a further communication next week once we have reached an agreement on what to do with the money already raised.

Best wishes to all,

Giles

Rev'd Dr Giles Fraser

February 2005

Money. Money. Money.

From Giles, Rector

This e-mail is about money. The Parish is in trouble financially. We really need your help. Richard Holman describes the situation below, and if you have any questions please contact him. For my part, I just want to say that this Parish really feels that it is beginning to fly. We are attracting more and more people, we have finished the Brewer Building and have engaged Chris Eyden to take responsibility for pastoral care. Fairly soon we will have a new priest at All Saints. A great deal of exciting stuff is going on.

And it’s us that pays for it all. We don’t get subsidised. We are dependent upon you for keeping all this going. I hate talking about money, but it’s the juice that keeps us running: marrying lovers, burying the dead, baptising children, helping run church schools, supporting poorer parishes and local charities as well as offering a space for prayer and reflection.

If you can review what you contribute to the Parish, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

From Richard, Financial Guru

In last month’s e-newsletter I set out the financial challenge facing the Parish in 2006. Expenditure £350K, income £300K – it doesn’t take Mr Micawber to realise that that spells misery!

Costs are largely irreducible, so our only way out is to improve our income. There are three ways that we could achieve this:

· Ensure that as many members of the parish as possible contribute on a regular basis by standing order. If you e-mail me, I’ll send you the details. Alternatively, you can find the details on the parish web-site and at an exhibition about giving recently set up at in the foyer at St Mary’s.

· Ensure that all tax payers have signed a Gift Aid form. Whatever your political persuasion, please allow us to make use of Gordon Brown’s bounty! If you are a taxpayer all you have to do is to sign a Gift Aid form, which enables us to increase the value of your gift by 28% (and, if you are a higher rate tax payer, you to reduce your own tax bill by 23% of your payment).

· Ask those of you who are already giving regularly to review the amount you pay. You don’t need to be told that all costs rise. Most of us (not all, I know) are fortunate enough to have incomes that rise as well. If you are already a regular donor how long is it since you reviewed the amount that you give? Could you perhaps match the figure to the movement in your salary? That could apply downwards as well as upwards.

Anything that you can do to help with the finances will be greatly appreciated.

Standing Order forms and Gift Aid forms can be found on the Parish website home page or can be obtained from Richard Holman on 020.8789.0953 or at 11 Genoa Avenue, Putney, SW15 6DY.

January 2006
Crossing Borders Project

Over the first few days of April, just after the Israeli elections, a group of young writers, from Israel, Palestine and Jordan will be coming to Putney to take part in a unique project of reconciliation.

They come as a part of the journalistic team of the Crossing Borders magazine project, a magazine written by young people and distributed widely in schools in both Israel and Palestine. The hope is that through their writing and shared experiences they may reveal to communities on both sides of the conflict the fears and hopes that are common to all.

Yet such is the tragedy of the Middle East, it is not possible or safe for these young people to meet up in their home countries - hence the need to go abroad to produce the magazine and to spend valuable time with each other.

This project is being organised through the peace centre at Givat Haviva, and in by the Parish of Putney and local marketing agency, Meteorite.

In order to do this we need to raise a lot of money!!!!!!! As part of this there are a number of events that will be taking place in Putney in the next couple of months…

Full details of all events will be on www.crossingbordersfund.org from next week.
